White Ribbon Scotland publishes Board Diversity 2018-2020
George Eckton Chair of Trustees said “We have recently signed the First Minister’s 50/50 by 2020 pledge and currently we have a 50:50 Board and are keen to continue with gender balance. We think equal representation is one key mechanism for addressing the current gender inequalities of Scottish society. In line with the 50/50 pledge we think effective boards bring together diverse thinking and talent. We are here to support our colleagues in the VAW sector and it’s vital we have the widest talent on a Board of a Charity focussed on Men and Boys. That’s why we think a diverse and gender balanced board is important to inform our responses and actions. So we welcome the opportunity to sign up to the Partnership for Change and commit to further the diversity of our Board and whilst we have gender parity at the moment, we will work towards maintaining that and working towards 50/50 gender balance by 2020”.
This week’s Gender Balance on Public Boards Bill is therefore a show of welcome leadership by Scottish Government and hopefully Scottish Parliament in legislating on such an important issue. We are proactively working to implement our new Board Diversity Plan and to promote to all under-represented groups the opportunities to start or continue your board journey with White Ribbon Scotland. We would hope our volunteers and supporters could take this 50/50 message to their workplaces and other aspects of their life to seek to continue to deliver wider change, as we need to prevent gender inequalities leading to attitudes and behaviours which lead to violence and abuse of women and girls. Equal representation is vital to prevent and address these issues early in any process or organisation.
