White Ribbon Scotland receives 1000th pledge

The Quay Restaurant played host to a White Ribbon Curry Night on May 19th. Around 80 men and women from across East Lothian and Midlothian turned up for curry and a chat about sexism and inequality, violence against women and what they can do to play a part in ending the abuse of the women in their lives.

Jim Leishman MBE had recently became the 1000th person to take the White Ribbon Scotland pledge and urged those in attendance to follow his example. Jim’s very amusing stories about his experiences in life and in football were well received by the room, as was his enthusiastic backing of the campaign. We were very grateful for Colin Beattie MSP to lend his support with his thoughtful opening remarks; DI Kenny Gray from Lothian and Borders Police also spoke out passionately about his experiences of dealing with the perpetrators and victims of domestic abuse from the perspective of a policeman.

The talks were supplemented by clips, messages and prizes from Adam Crozier and Edinburgh Rugby Club in support of the event, and of course a great curry buffet provided by Charan Gill and the Quay Restaurant! Attendees were also encouraged to take the pledge not to 'commit, condone or remain silent' about violence against women and learn how their actions can play a significant part in challenging the abuse and inequality that unfortunately remains so prevalent in our society. We are thankful to those who did so and welcome their support of the campaign as we work to challenge the attitudes which underpin violence and abuse.

The White Ribbon Curry Night was organised and funded by 'End It' - East Lothian and Midlothian Councils' partnership to raise awareness of violence against women and to work together to eliminate abuse - and the East Lothian Diversity Network, which brings together individuals, community organisations and groups that are interested in equality and diversity issues. White Ribbon Scotland also contributed to event costs through funding awarded by Awards for All.
