Professor Michael Johnson to speak at Domestic Conference

We are delighted to announce that West Lothian Council and White Ribbon Scotland will be hosting an event with international domestic abuse expert Michael Johnson.

Through research which presents both incident-based measures and more detailed descriptions of abuse, Prof Michael Johnson will examine the evidence around violence and relationships. The speaker will unpick the complexities of domestic abuse, how these differ from other forms of violence and how to make sense of domestic abuse incidents in practice. Prof Johnson will also look at the meaning and importance of a gendered approach when dealing with domestic abuse cases and key implications for practice.

Prof Michael Johnson has been concerned with this debate for many years and presents a useful approach to understanding the dynamics of domestic abuse. Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan, Michael Johnson is internationally well known for his pioneering research on domestic abuse. His theory of “intimate terrorism” has shaped and influenced Scotland’s definition of domestic abuse, our policies and practice when responding to this issue.

This will be a unique training opportunity and we would encourage you to book early to avoid disappointment. This event is free, however spaces are limited. If you would like to register please contact caitlynn.emery@westlothian.gov.uk or 01506 283385 by Friday, 14th February.
Unfortunately we are unable to provide refreshments, however they can be purchased within Howden Park Centre.

Please note that if you fail to attend the event or cancel with less than 24 hours notice your service/organisation will be charged £25
