Dumfries and Galloway White Ribbon Network Update

After forming the Dumfries and Galloway White Ribbon Network at the White Ribbon Night which marked the beginning of the 16 Days of Action 2010, we are pleased to report on further and upcoming activities.

On October 25th Dumfries and Galloway Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership (DG DAVAWP) and White Ribbon Scotland teamed up to hold the second White Ribbon Night in Dumfries. We heard from Council Convener Patsy Gilroy and new Chair of the DG DAVAWP DCC Mike McCormick who illustrated the extent of violence against women in the Dumfries and Galloway area. Jim Thompson, former captain of Queen of the South FC, delivered a speech detailing his view on the role that football clubs should play in speaking out and challenging sexist behaviour from the stands.

The main event was the showing of 'Take My Eyes', a powerful film by Iciar Bollain telling the story of a man's emotional abuse of his partner, Pilar. The film depicts how difficult it can be to leave such a relationship despite the abuse, as Pilar struggles to break free from the man who claims to 'love' her. The evening closed with a question and answer session and a chance for those present to pledge support to the White Ribbon Scotland campaign.

We are looking forward to two further White Ribbon events during the 16 Days. There will be a further showing of 'Take My Eyes' in the Ryan Centre, Stranraer, at 1pm on Friday 2nd December. If anyone wishes to come along then please contact the DG DAVAWP for more information and to reserve a place - flyer is attached.

To mark the beginning of the 16 Days of Action we are also looking forward to awarding the winner of the first White Ribbon Song Competiton in Scotland! To follow on from last year's White Ribbon Night there was a poetry competition, with the prize awarded on International Women's Day. This year we have asked Dumfries and Galloway's young people to show their creative side by writing songs with an anti-violence against women message. A concert is being held on the evening of 25th November to showcase 5 of the entries and a prize will be awarded to the winner in a ceremony after the performances - come and show your support and applaud the talent of these local musicians as we raise awareness of the White Ribbon Campaign during this important period! Please contact the DG DAVAWP to request a space at the event.
